Clemson Tigers football head coach Dabo Swinney was unable to cast his vote in the 2024 United States presidential election for one of the strangest reasons you’ll ever hear.
Former President Donald Trump is running against Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. When Dabo Swinney went to cast his vote, he was greeted with an unpleasant surprise.
Swinney’s actual first name is “William.” He and his wife, Kathleen, have a son also named “Will.” Per the Associated Press, Swinney was unable to cast his vote because of a voting system error that stemmed from his son’s name, though officials are working to resolve the issue:
“Swinney, whose given name is William, explained that the voting system had locked him out, saying a “William Swinney” had already voted last week. Swinney said it was his oldest son, Will, and not him…Dabo Swinney had to complete a paper ballot and was told there will be a hearing on Friday to resolve the issue.”
Despite the time-consuming and unfortunate matter, Dabo Swinney used humor when discussing the issue to reporters.
“They done voted me out of the state,” Swinney said, via the Associated Press. “We’re 6-2 and 5-1 (in the Atlantic Coast Conference), man. They done shipped me off.”

Clemson had a six-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Louisville Cardinals last week, falling 33-21 despite racking up 222 yards on the ground. Tigers QB Cade Klubnik had a frustrating outing, completing 33 of 56 pass attempts for 228 yards and just one touchdown.
Swinney has been the full-time head coach at Clemson (he took over as the interim HC in 2008) since 2009. The 54-year-old led the school to national championships in 2016 and 2018.
If she defeats Trump, Harrs will become the first female president in United States history. If the Republican nominee wins, he’ll become the second president to serve two non-consecutive terms, a feat held by only Grover Cleveland.
Dabo Swinney & Clemson Look To Rebound vs. Virginia Tech
The Tigers are still in a good spot at 6-2, with only one of their final four games taking place against a ranked team; they visit No. 18-ranked Pittsburgh on Nov. 16.
Swinney and his Tigers will try to bounce back and remain in the 12-team NCAA postseason picture when they visit the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday.
