Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is on one of the hottest seats in the NFL, as the Cowboys are at risk of their season slipping away. The frustration is palpable in Dallas, and it was on display throughout Dallas’ 27-21 loss to the Falcons.
The Cowboys found themselves in a hole against the Falcons, as Atlanta took a 14-3 lead in the game. McCarthy was clearly frustrated, as evidenced by him throwing a tablet on the sidelines during the game.

McCarthy’s moment is just another example of the pressure that the entire team is currently facing. Here is what you need to know regarding why McCarthy threw the tablet on the sidelines.
Mike McCarthy tablet video, explained
With the Falcons up 7-3, Dallas forced an Atlanta fumble to give them the ball back with a chance to take the lead in the second quarter. However, the Cowboys couldn’t take advantage, as the Dallas offense failed to convert on a 4th-and-1, as wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was stopped short on a jet sweep.
Not only did that play end the Cowboys’ drive, it also gave the Falcons great field position, which later allowed them to score their second touchdown of the day. When Fox came back from commercial following the Lamb stop, that is when they showed McCarthy throwing the tablet.
Will Cowboys fire Mike McCarthy?
While McCarthy is on the hot seat, there is no evidence yet that the Cowboys will fire him midseason. Dallas owner Jerry Jones has maintained that McCarthy’s job is not in jeopardy despite the slow start.
Still, the more the Cowboys lose, the harder it will be for Dallas to keep him as head coach. The Cowboys entered Sunday on a two-game losing streak and in third place in the NFC East, and after playing the first-place Falcons, they get the second-place Eagles, first-place Texans and first-place Commanders. That difficult schedule may decide how much longer McCarthy remains in his position.
After the Cowboys loss on Sunday, Jones stood firm that he is “good” with his head coach.
Mike McCarthy contract
McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, as the Cowboys did not choose to extend him following the 2023 season. When the Cowboys first hired McCarthy in 2020, they gave him a five-year deal making anywhere between $4-7 million a year.
Therefore, once the season ends, McCarthy will be a free agent regardless of how the season ends. If Dallas prefers, they could play out the season then hire a new coach in the offseason without ever deciding to fire McCarthy.
