Every week seems like it brings more problems for the Dallas Cowboys these days.
It’s not bad enough that the Cowboys are 3-5, head coach Mike McCarthy is on the hot seat, and owner Jerry Jones gets lampooned daily for his inaction in free agency. Now, the Cowboys are dealing with injuries to their two most important players, quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb.
At this point, the 2024 season may be a wash for the Cowboys. But this franchise doesn’t readily accept failure, and Jones will come out guns blazing in pursuit of a playoff spot in 2025. If Dallas wants to get back to the playoffs, though, they’ll need reinforcements for their slumping offensive line.
Perhaps an unexpected reunion could be in order. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently named eight-time Pro Bowler. 13-year Cowboys veteran Tyron Smith as a fit for Dallas in free agency after signing a one-year contract this year with the New York Jets.
“Smith will turn 34 next month and struggled to stay on the field over the past few years with the Dallas Cowboys… That said, Smith is a future Hall of Famer and can still be very effective in the run game,” Knox said.
“Teams with a plan at left tackle but who also have questions (could be) in the mix. Given Tyler Guyton’s rookie struggles, the Cowboys might consider bringing back Smith, as they did Ezekiel Elliott this past offseason.”
Smith, 33, hasn’t exactly been Mr. Reliable in New York, given that he has committed six penalties and shouldered the responsibility for five sacks in nine games. With that said, the fact that he may stay healthy for the entire season could boost his stock, because the more he plays, the more he could regain his old mojo.
It’s an unconventional solution, but perhaps bringing Smith home to Dallas could help both the present and future of the Cowboys at the left tackle position. However, if another team decides Smith is worth paying like a full-time starter, that may spell doom for Dallas’ pursuit.
