McGrath justified his behavior by stating he was retaliating for an incident that never went down.

Losing A Player To An Ejection Did not Effect The North Carolina State Wolfpack From Getting Blown Out
North Carolina State Wolfpack had no shot on Saturday in their game against the Clemson Tigers.
In that game, the team would lose N.C. State left tackle Anthony Belton who was ejected Saturday for spitting on a Clemson defender right before halftime.
The moment came after the Tigers had sacked Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey. In the middle of the scrum, an official threw a flag well after the whistle and Belton’s ejection for unsportmanlike conduct was announced.
In the end, his ejection did not matter, as the team lost 35 to 59 on the road, dropping their record to 2-2 on the year.
