Hunter Becomes The Hunted: New Role for Cowboys' Luepke?

Dallas Cowboys fullback Hunter Luepke has been a steady hand for the offense in a bit-part role, but is it time for Mike McCarthy to give him more reps?

The Dallas Cowboys offense has been scratchy at best through four weeks. With the team sitting at 2-2 and coach Mike McCarthy‘s unit still figuring out its identity, could we see a change-up now that the team is on a mini-bye?

The biggest area of concern, as it has been since the beginning of training camp, has been the run game. Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn have all tried their hand at giving Dallas some resemblance of a rushing attack, all to no avail.

While Rico seems to have already usurped Zeke as RB1, we offer up another name that could give the offense some juice – fullback Hunter Luepke.

Now, this hasn’t happened just because the run game was poor; through four games, whenever Hunter has been in the game, good things have happened.

Not to mention, when Dallas needs a fourth-down conversion, it isn’t Elliott, Rico, or Deuce who has gotten the task of converting—it has been Hunter.

Additionally, Luepke has been a force in the passing game, too, hauling in six catches for 73 yards. In a similar way to his fourth-down efforts, Dak Prescott has repeatedly targeted Hunter on third downs in the passing game, and of course, Luepke has picked them up. Of his six catches, four have gone for first downs.

Hunter’s ability as a blocker in both the run and pass game has also drawn positive reviews. Given the state of Dallas’ offense, Luepke seems to be one of the only constants through four weeks. … as a fullback, a ball-carrier, a tight end, an H-back …

He’s been a bit-part player in the first month; maybe it’s time to release Luepke and give him more reps going forward.

Hunter has more than deserved that opportunity. And this offense needs to be looking under every rock for help.
