Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spent the summer defending a quiet offseason, claiming the franchise was “all in” despite a lack of meaningful moves in free agency.
Eight games into the season, the Cowboys’ version of “all in” isn’t good enough.

Dallas is just 3-5, already matching last season’s loss total and sitting 3.5 games out of first place in an NFC East division it won a year ago. Jones admits the situation isn’t ideal, but he told reporters after Sunday’s 27-21 loss to the Falcons that he’s far from giving up hope of a late-season resurgence.
Here’s a look at what Jones had to say as the Cowboys prepare to face another tough stretch of their schedule.
Jerry Jones postgame interview
Jones admitted after Sunday’s loss that the Cowboys’ situation is “bleak” at the moment, but he expressed optimism about the second half of the season.
“I’m a long way from being dismayed about this team this year,” Jones told reporters.
Still, the longtime owner was apologetic for the franchise’s struggles through eight games.
“This is not a good time. I really regret this for all of our Dallas Cowboy fans,” Jones said, adding that he believes in his coaching staff as Mike McCarthy faces questions about his future.
With the trade deadline approaching and the top of the NFC seemingly stronger than the AFC, some speculated that the Cowboys might either sit still or sell off pieces by Tuesday’s trade deadline. Jones indicated Sunday that Dallas could still look to add.
“We’ll probably do a couple things this week,” Jones said, adding that the front office “has some things in the mix.”

Jones also told reporters that he’s “concerned” about the hamstring injury that forced QB Dak Prescott out of Sunday’s game, which might fly in the face of his optimism for the remainder of the season. With the Eagles, Texans, and Commanders next up on Dallas’ schedule, any missed time by Prescott might sink the Cowboys to a point they can’t recover from.
Some fans might see midseason acquisitions as too little, too late by Jones. The Cowboys largely stood pat in the offseason, earning Jones no shortage of criticism, and the 82-year-old recently defended the decision not to pursue RB Derrick Henry by blaming it on the team’s salary cap situation.
The Cowboys could finish Sunday three full games out of a playoff spot, raising questions about whether a deadline acquisition or two would be enough to move the needle in a season teetering on disaster.
