New Airport Opens This Month on the Amalfi Coast

Reopening the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport marks a significant development for travelers to the Amalfi Coast and the broader Cilento area. After being closed since 2016, this historic airport is set to resume operations, offering improved access and a fresh travel experience.

Initially opened in 1926 as a military airport, the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport has a rich history. Over the decades, it has served various purposes, including as a flying school and a training center for carabinieri firefighters and parachuters. It briefly operated as a commercial flight hub before closing in 2016.

One of the airport’s hangars was designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, a pioneer of the early 20th-century rationalist style, adding architectural value to its historical significance.

The airport’s reopening is part of a comprehensive architectural and infrastructure project led by Dutch engineering firm Deerns, along with Alfonso Femia, Od’a Officina d’Architettura, Techproject, and Sun Flower Engineering. The new design, with its emphasis on reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 390 tons per year, and the 170,000-square-foot terminal with a two-level modular frame, is a testament to our commitment to the environment.

The terminal incorporates photovoltaic panels on the roof and an open piazza plan filled with light, greenery, and iridescent colors. These elements are designed to harmonize with the region’s natural landscape.

On July 11, the airport will welcome its first commercial flight from the Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea. This marks the beginning of a new era for travelers seeking more accessible access to the Amalfi Coast and its UNESCO-designated beauty.

Located just 12 miles from Salerno, 28 miles from Amalfi, and 45 miles from Naples, the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport offers a strategic location for exploring the Campania region. It is particularly convenient for those aiming to avoid the crowds at Naples’ Capodichino Airport, which handles 12 million passengers annually. This strategic location ensures a convenient and hassle-free travel experience.

The reopening of the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is a landmark event for southern Italy. It will provide enhanced access to the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento region, promoting tourism and signifies a broader economic investment in the area.
