Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has revealed that pop superstar Taylor Swift, who is currently dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is taking an active interest in football—so much so that she’s even started suggesting game plays for the team.
During an interview on NFL on NBC, Mahomes, 28, shared, “She’s really interested in football. She asks a lot of great questions… She’s already drawing up plays, so we might have to put one in.”
Swift, 34, who has become a regular presence at NFL games since she started dating Kelce last September, appears to have developed a genuine passion for the sport. Her love for football was likely influenced by her father, Scott Swift, a long-time Philadelphia Eagles fan.
However, her involvement deepened last season when she began attending more games to support Kelce, 34, even going so far as to make a 12-hour trip from her tour in Japan to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl in February.
At the Super Bowl, Swift’s sports knowledge came in handy when she helped fellow attendee and rapper Ice Spice, 24, understand the game. The “Barbie World” rapper recently admitted on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that she relied on Swift’s reactions to know when to cheer, saying, “I honestly would just wait until Taylor cheered and then I’m like, Yay!”
Mahomes, who recently spent time with Swift and Kelce at a gathering at Swift’s Rhode Island mansion, praised Swift for her impact on the NFL, particularly in attracting more female fans to the sport. “I think it’s been cool to see the girls and the women that have really embraced watching football,” Mahomes said on NFL on NBC. As a father to two daughters, Mahomes added, “I know being a girl dad how cool it is for me… to see like these little girls, these daughters, how much they’re loving and spending time with their dad watching football.”
Swift’s influence on the NFL’s popularity has been significant. Last October, after she attended a Chiefs versus Jets game with a star-studded group of friends, including Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman, the game’s viewership soared. A Storyful newsletter at the time reported that Swift’s attendance helped bring in 27 million viewers, marking a 22% increase from the previous year’s Week 4 matchup.
As the Chiefs prepare to kick off their 2024 regular season on September 5th against the Baltimore Ravens, it remains unconfirmed whether Swift will be in attendance. However, fans can likely expect to see her cheering on Kelce at several games throughout the season, potentially bringing her play-calling insights to the field.
