Michigan Wolverines defensive coordinator Don ‘Wink’ Martindale, who held the same role for the New York Giants from 2022 to 2023, couldn’t help but take a shot at his old team on Wednesday.

Martindale was hired as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator in 2022, after former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was brought in to replace Joe Judge as the head coach. After just two years, however, Daboll and Martindale parted ways following a disappointing 2023 campaign.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Wolverines’ pivotal showdown with No. 8 ranked Indiana on Saturday, Martindale took a brutal shot at his old employers, via the New York Post.

“You know, I’m glad that I’m here. I love the players that we have. I think that it’s obviously a different game. But, you know, it’s a lot better than being in some places that are 2-7 (the Giants’ record).

Daboll won NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2022 after leading the New York Giants to a 9-6-1 record and rare postseason appearance. Martindale was instrumental in turning Big Blue’s defense into one of the NFL’s best, but the good vibes only lasted one year.

The Giants finished 6-11 and missed the postseason for the sixth time in three years. Martindale’s departure was called a mutual parting of ways, but some believe that Daboll forced him out.

New York Giants Are In Contention For Top Pick Of 2025

The Giants are one of nine teams with a record of either 2-6 or 2-7, putting them in contention to finish with the first overall pick. Daboll’s future with the team is in question, but it’s a sure bet that quarterback Daniel Jones won’t be here next year.
